El despotismo es un gobierno de una autoridad singular, una persona o un grupo de personas que no están estrechamente relacionadas, que podían gobernar con poder absoluto. A Un término relacionado es despotismo benevolente o despotismo ilustrado, el cual se refiere específicamente a una forma de gobernar que llegó a ser prominente en el siglo XVIII. En esta instancia, los monarcas absolutos usaban su autoridad para instituir varias reformas en la estructura política y social en sus naciones. Este movimiento probablemente fue influido grandemente por los principios de la Ilustración.
Aunque la palabra actualmente lleva una connotación negativa, originalmente era una posición legítima en el Imperio bizantino. El título despotēs se otorgaba a los miembros de la casa imperial. Esta tradición empezó con el que sería el futuro rey Béla III de Hungría, como el que sería el futuro yerno y heredero del emperador bizantino, Manuel I Comneno en 1163. Según Gyula Moravcsik, el título fue una simple traducción del título húngaro de Béla "Úr" (Maestro o Señor), pero otros historiadores creen que viene del título romano dominus.
